Unplug and Let Go!

As the end of summer draws closer and closer, many of us continue to hope for an economic recovery this fall that will propel our businesses and our lives out of this morass.

For me, even on beautiful weekends such as this, it is  very hard to put work aside for a few days, and just unplug.  Literally, walk away from the computer, the iPhone, Twitter, Facebook, blah blah, blah.  Last night I found myself shopping for a piece of software on my iPhone after 11PM, as I yawned and fought to stay awake.  I seem to always have ‘just one more thing…’

My advice for the rest of the weekend, which I plan on taking myself:  Turn it all off and go do something else!  Tuesday will come quickly enough, and we will be right back into it.  As a side note, I find it interesting that the ‘digital revolution’ that was all the buzz in the 1990s that was supposed to make us more productive, has really seemed to enslave us and inhibit our ability to actually HAVE FUN.

Need an idea for something to do?  Here are a few off the top of my head:

Play a round of golf–and walk it–you will be exhausted!

Do something touristy in your own town (I lived in NYC for almost 20 years and have never been to the Statue of Liberty).

If you’re in NYC, take a walk all the way around Central Park (6 miles)

Go wine tasting

Visit a town you’ve never been to

If you’re in SF, take the Alcatraz tour…very cool!

Go see a baseball game–even a minor league game.  I promise you will remember why it’s America’s pastime.

Go to a great museum

If you have ideas to add, let’s list them too!

There are so many, many things to do that will get you and your family up and out.  Let’s just take that collective first step:  Turn off your computers, no more texting, and really, really unplug for a few days.  I promise when you return to work, you will feel much more like actually working.

Have a happy and safe Labor Day weekend!
